Our Work Place
Dominion Salt is the only salt manufacturing company in New Zealand and employs around 130 people between our two sites located at Mount Maunganui and Lake Grassmere.Our products are supplied nationwide throughout New Zealand to multiple industries, as well as exporting salt to over 25 countries around the world. We are part of the broader Salt Group covering business units in Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia and owned by CK Life Sciences.
Our Mount Maunganui site manufactures Pharmaceutical Grade Sodium Chloride using an energy efficient recrystallization plant (Vacuum Pan Refinery). Our Pharmaceutical product is ranked in the top 5 in the world and its popularity is growing.
Dominion Salt operates the only Vacuum Pan refineries in Australasia, supplying highly purified salts to the food manufacturing industries on both sides of the Tasman.
Lake Grassmere is where our salt business was first established back in 1942, with the first salt deposits happening in 1949. It is a landmark site with its high stock piles of salt and pink lakes visible to travellers passing on the highway (SH1). Marlborough salt has become a sought after product that is exclusively produced at Lake Grassmere by people that are passionate about this region.
Our roots are firmly connected with our NZ salt making founder George Skellerup. We draw on his vision and are a company that takes pride in satisfying customers by doing things better, smarter and to specification.
Carbon Reduction
In line with meeting our country’s commitments to reduce carbon emissions, Dominion Salt has a pathway in manufacturing that can reduce 94% of annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2034.
We were early adopters of energy efficiency improvements, receiving an EECA Energy Efficiency and Innovation Award in 2012, and installing a wind turbine at Lake Grassmere in 2014.
